Heat the candle a little and try again by holding the flame on the wick a little longer. If it still causes problems you can pass the flame of the lighter over the surface and try again. When lighting the candle for the first time, keep the candle lit for at least an hour, enough time for the wax "pool" to create under the wick. Make sure there are no drafts or drafts directed at the flame.
